Trying not to take it for granted...
I made a statement to my mom a couple of weeks ago that went something like this, "Could you imagine not living here?" Neither of us could, and it was in a good way.
At the time of discussion, my dad and I had just spent two days canning salmon, and canning minced and smoked clams. There was salmon brining - to later be put in the Big Chief smoker; and the big freezer was packed with king salmon, waiting to be stuffed into the smoke house (see product of labor above - thanks Dad for sending it up!)
Being in a family where fishing is your business, I think I discovered early the bounty of the ocean. I may not have realized then how insanely lucky we are to have that at our disposal each and every summer - but I learned quickly. My parents, especially my dad, work hard to fill all of our freezers for the winter.
If you've ever done it, you know that cleaning two limits of clams three days in a row, every couple of weeks, for four months... kinda, well, sucks. :) But we have all come to realize that the reward far exceeds the effort and how awesome it is to be able to share the entire experience with your family. It's fun. And even though my sisters and I are in our twenties, we still enjoy being 'home.' A typical day at my parent's house in the summer is like so:
Dogs are everywhere (if my older sister is there when I am, there's 7 dogs total.)
Half of us sleep in the cabin, so at least half of us will get some sleep.
Lots of coffee.
Check tide book.
Hit some golf balls.
Ride the 4-wheeler around while the aussie of the bunch tries to herd you.
Hit more golf balls.
More coffee.
Go to the beach.
Dig Clams. Clean clams.
Take a nap.
Go see Gram.
Sit out on the lawn chair.
Chew on some squaw candy.
Drive into town just because.
Take some photos of the beautiful scenery that you've already take a zillion photos of before.
Check out the berry bushes to see if they will be ripe any time soon.
BBQ.
Check the freezer to make sure progress is being made.
Beer thirty.
More dogs.
Fire pit.
Laugh, love, and sleep it off so we can do it all over again.
I'd say we are pretty lucky. The key is not taking any of it for granted.
