It's a beautiful time of year in the AK.
The fireweed are taller than I am.
When I was little, fireweed was like the ultimate toy. It could transform into a sword in seconds by grabbing it on one end and swiping all of the flowers and leaves off so it left just the thick woody stem. Good enough to snap your sister and leave a little bit of a welt!
It could also morph into money - each leaf was a dollar. We were rich!
It would also add a nice bit of color to our mud pies.
It presented a natural maze for us to run through and hide in and at 4 foot nothin' the only way you'd know we were in there is by the way the tops shook and swayed.
In Ninilchik, at my parents house, there's fireweed everywhere - just like what I remember.
It really takes me back to how all we used to need to stay entertained was mother earth and each other.
Although nowadays to stay entertained requires anything from 3-D glasses to a wireless router; I hope that we don't and won't forget about the natural playground that's all around us, all the time.
With the fireweed in full bloom, it's a sure sign fall is around the corner, and us Alaskans can only be thankful for our nice little break in the snow storm. Our summers may be short, but they are magnificent.
Some shots from the weekend...
My too-cute-for-words niece, Emma with grams!
Getting ready for winter
Bringin' heat!
And more fireweed because it's so dang pretty!
My mom asked me why I didn't just have fireweed as my wedding flower - since my wedding was in the month of August ("because that would have saved us some money!" she said...) Good idea, but I guess it would have clashed with my orange, brown, and green colors a bit (I responded.)
Either way, enjoy the fields of pink while you can because it was 38 degrees when I woke up this morning and we all know what that means...
~TGIF to all~
